Home Fire Protection

Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems

Why sprinklers in the home? ........Sprinklers Save Lives!

Most homeowners aren't exactly sure what fire sprinklers are or how they work.  Movies and television don't represent fire sprinklers accurately.  In fact, to play up the drama, they help propagate the myth of incredible water damage most people (and insurance companies) imagine fire sprinklers can cause.  The truth is that most fires are extinguished by a single sprinkler with a properly designed and installed fire protection system.  And because the system operates on normal water pressure, it could save your life even in a power outage, unlike a disconnected or dead battery in a smoke detector.

Fire sprinklers are "automatic" and operate independently of each other.  Every sprinkler has an element or link that is heat sensitive.  The heat from a fire, or even smoldering material rises to the ceiling where sprinklers are installed.  Depending on the type of sprinkler, the element melts or breaks releasing water that then strikes a deflector that makes a spray pattern much like that of a garden hose nozzle if you squeeze the handle about half way.

If you ever watch the news, you don't have to watch very long to see how fire has destroyed someone's home and devastated their lives. More people are killed in residential fires every year than any other household accident. The largest number of those being children, the elderly and handicapped. Additionally, annual property loss from fires is in the billions of dollars. And the worst part is that most fire victims die unaware that a fire had even started in their home, suffocating in their sleep from smoke inhalation. Even greater tragedies are reported when that extends to firefighters who are injured or killed in the line of duty, trying to save lives and extinguish blazes. Often the subsequent fire investigation discovers that the fire starts due to a single careless act. In most cases, residential fire sprinklers can prevent such tragedies, saving the lives of the occupants and making it unnecessary for firefighters to put themselves at risk.

Technology exists today that makes a sprinkler system for the home effective, simple to install and at a relatively low cost, in new homes being constructed and existing homes already built. What price would you put on the lives of your loved ones? What kind of piece of mind would you get from knowing that your home and your family are protected, automatically? Residential sprinklers can provide protection with much less water required for commercial or industrial applications, minimizing water damage and saving the lives of the occupants. Some sprinklers are even designed to be inconspicuous and aesthetically pleasing.

A fire can start in the home no matter how careful or well prepared you are. Even early warning devices, such as smoke detectors, may not be sufficient to prevent tragedy.
